Sri Lanka Trip Cost from India: A Realistic Budget Breakdown
13 August 2026 · 5 min read
Sri Lanka is one of the closer and more affordable international trips available from most Indian cities — flights from Chennai and Bengaluru run under two hours, and the overall cost tends to land noticeably below equivalent Southeast Asia trips once flights and hotels are both factored in.
Flights are usually the smallest line item on a Sri Lanka budget relative to other international trips, thanks to the short distance — the bigger swing factor is timing. Booking six to eight weeks ahead, and avoiding the Sri Lankan and Indian holiday-season overlap in December, keeps fares closer to the lower end of the range.
Accommodation in 4-star hotels across a typical Sigiriya-Kandy-Nuwara Eliya-coast circuit is where mid-range budgets diverge most: hill-country hotels in Nuwara Eliya and Kandy run cheaper than coastal resorts in Bentota or Galle, so a trip weighted toward the hill country stretches the same budget further than a beach-heavy itinerary.
A private car-and-driver for the full circuit is the standard way to get around outside Colombo, and it's usually priced into package tours rather than booked separately. It's worth having regardless of budget level — Sri Lanka's road network between hill-country towns is slow and winds through terrain that's genuinely difficult to self-drive unfamiliar.
For a 6-night trip covering Sigiriya, Kandy, and a beach stop, mid-range packages with 4-star hotels typically start around ₹35,000-50,000 per person depending on season and inclusions — the Diwali and December windows sit at the higher end, while April-June and September tend to be noticeably cheaper for the same itinerary.
